THOUGHTS FOR FRIDAY- SOCIAL MEDIA

You might have noticed or maybe you haven’t that I’ve stayed off social media for the past couple of weeks. I have a love hate relationship with social media and I am specifically talking about Instagram. When Instagram first came out it was so exciting and inspirational and original. Now, it’s the same, same, and more of the same. On the other hand, I love everything visual about Instagram, I am a very visual creative person so images are what move me. But, I was scrolling through my feed the other day and noticed that every fashion blogger had on the same cardigan, the same jeans, the same wavy hair, and were all carrying the same Chloe bag. First of all, how in the hell are you 22 years old, and carrying a Chloe bag along with a Prada, Louis Vuitton, and Chanel? I know that’s besides the point but Instagram is lacking a serious content of originality. Or, have we as humans become so Stepford Wives that we have no idea how to be original anymore? Don’t get me wrong, I am sure I fall right into this category because again I love Instagram, so there are things I will see on there that I have to have that minute. But, at the end of the day I wouldn’t ever buy anything that wasn’t “me” or do something just because someone else thinks it’s cool. I had a conversation with a good friend the other day who mentioned it’s all “wasted fashion” at this point. And, that is such a true statement. What happened to investing in nice pieces and having a few good staple wardrobe items. Now, it’s a new trend every single day and it’s so unappealing. I read an article recently that discussed how social media will eventually move back to more organic live posting as people will start to demand more authenticity, I hope this is actually true. I love a well curated feed as much as the next person but I can’t stand seeing the same pictures over and over. Is anyone else feeling this way or is it just me? We are heading to Chicago this weekend to visit some friends and I couldn’t be more excited. I’ll be back next week with some of our San Francisco pictures and things I am loving for Fall but just had to get this off my mind. Thanks for listening and have a great weekend.

As I am sure you noticed in San Francisco, “high fashion” does not mean having a $700 handbag…you find that women who are totally themselves, wear clothes that fit well and compliment a personality…they are often celebrated. When I lived there, I learned that I looked great…for myself, and no one else mattered. I hear you with originality….especially as a woman that has little time to shop.

  • um. YES. I’ve really really gotten picky about who I follow on Instagram now so that my feed can actually be a beautiful collection of accounts I really support and love. I was also so discouraged after joining a facebook group for Shopstyle. SO many people have been posting “follow for follow” posts, and it just seems so inauthentic to follow people just to be followed back – not to mention so many complaints are going around about those people then unfollowing several days later. But what do people expect!? It was all just so lame to see. I wish people concentrated on content and NOT the numbers. I think we’d all be more inclined to use the platform authentically. I sometimes wish they would do away with “likes” all together!!

I’m super tardy reading this, but… I love everything about this. Well said!
