Several weeks ago I posted a photo on IG stories talking about how we had recently started putting MCT oil in our coffee. I first became interested in MCT oil after I read this book, The Better Brain Solution, which discusses how to sharpen cognitive function and avoid memory loss. With Alzheimer’s being so prevelant anymore, I feel it’s so important to do what we can now to hopefully prolong these effects if they are going to happen. My grandmother had early signs of Alzheimer’s and my aunt has full blown Alzheimer’s and I’ve seen first hand how it deeply effects all those family members around them. The book is written by a Cardiologist and although it’s pretty scientific I found it pretty easy to follow along with ( I also listened to it as an audiobook in my car which probably helped). The doctor discusses the benefits of MCT oil among other things like food you should be eating everyday for improved cognitive function and what you shouldn’t. So you ask what actually is MCT oil? Well, without getting to complicated basically they are Medium Chain Triglycerides, which is a form of saturated fat that supposedly has numerous health benefits like improved cognitive function and better weight management. For the record, I am not using MCT oil for weight management, I am using it for the improved cognitive function. Coconut Oil is actually a great source of MCT but recently more concentrated MCT oil has gained popularity and that’s why you’re hearing so much more about it these days. It’s not like it was just discovered by any means. Medium-chain fats are digested easily and sent directly to your liver, where they have a thermogenic effect and the ability to positively alter your metabolism. This is one reason why many people claim that MCTs, including coconut oil, are burned by the body for energy, or “fuel,” instead of being stored as fat. Basically, the benefits of MCT oil are: To think more clearly, maintain a healthy weight ( since they make you feel full), have more energy, and help with digestion. Now, there’s all sorts of information out there in regards to what kind of MCT oil you should be taking, I’ll spare you more of the scientific data and you can google it all if you really want to know. The MCT oil that we use is by Sports Research and you can buy on Amazon. One more thing that some people are into the Bulletproof Coffee with is using the specific Bulletproof Coffee with grass fed butter and MCT oil. I spoke with a Cardiologist who is actually against this because he says we don’t need that much saturated fat in a given day. I’ve also spoken with a primary care doctor who actually recommends MCT Oil to his patients who are concerned about cognitive function. In the end, it’s best to do your own research and decide what actually works for you based off what you are wanting to get out of it. If you do start using MCT oil make sure to read the label first and start with the recommended dose to begin, I mix mine with coffee everyday. Tip- make sure to mix your oil in a blender with your coffee because if not then all the oil will sit at the top of your coffee and it’s not very pleasant tasting. And, just to mix it up I have also started adding Collagen Peptides to help with stronger hair, nails, and strong bones to the MCT oil and coffee every morning. Make sure if you have any health issues to check with your physician before doing any of this and again what works for us may not work for everyone.
