A Trip To The Farmer’s Market

One of my favorite things about the farmer’s market is the sounds and smells from the different vendors.  I love the colorful produce and fruit and I also like talking to the farmers about how to cook their produce.  There’s always an array of other local vendors too selling fresh bread, muffins, coffee, and cookies. Our market isn’t necessarily huge and there are some other things I wish they offered but it’s lovely to us.  However, I wouldn’t mind if it was like a market in Paris, but one can only dream.

I picked up some fresh mint for Mojitos and basil for Caprese.  Fresh herbs are my most favorite thing to buy at the market.

I am trying to eat more Kale so I picked up two different kinds.  The kind in the back is Blue Dwarf Kale, which is tender and crunchy and you can eat it by itself or with salads. In the front is Toscano Kale, best for Kale Chips which are one of my favorite snacks.

Yes the markets in Europe are awesome we enjoyed them on our trip. One tip for you on the fresh herbs – especially basil – trim the ends and place the bunch in a small mason jar – add just enough water to cover the base of the stems then add two ice cubes and repeat daily – trim ends if they get brown. Your basil will last all week. We buy ours on Sunday at the Mililani market love cooking with it.
